Do I need to have prior musical experience to take lessons?
No, you do not need any prior experience to take lessons. I will meet you where you’re at. I like to compare taking lessons to exercising: you don’t go to the gym once you’re strong; you go to the gym to get strong! Lessons are the place to get your voice and confidence in the best shape possible! I do this in a safe and encouraging environment. What are the benefits of voice lessons? Taking voice lessons can help individuals explore new musical styles and repertoire, build musicianship skills, and strengthen their voice. Singing improvements may include expanding one’s vocal range, learning vibrato, strengthening tone and intonation (singing in tune), breathing technique, phrasing, longevity, and more. Additionally, students can improve their overall confidence, stage presence, sustained vocal health, and their understanding of the full spectrum of the vocal instrument: the body. Students can improve their poise and projection for public speaking as well as prepare for college scholarships, auditions, and performances. How can I get the most from my lessons? You will get the most from your lessons if you come prepared with your music, a pencil, water, and, most importantly, an openness to explore, share, and grow! How long will it take for me to notice improvements in my singing? Most students will notice improvements during each lesson. Longterm growth will take time and practice. The more you sing with awareness and application of what you learn in your lessons, the more secure your progress will become. Are there any performance opportunities? Performances will be optional for all students. Performance opportunities may include seasonal recitals, open-mic events, or professional gigs that I am able to connect students to. Is there an age limit for lessons? I work with students across all age levels and abilities. For private settings, I recommend starting voice lessons after age 6, however, I will make exceptions for younger kids who have a desire for singing and performance training. For group singing (choir or group lessons), the age limit is more flexible. Please contact me with specific questions about your child’s age and interest. What is Self-Compassion and Somatic Work? Self-Compassion and Somatic Work are two aspects of healing that are dear to my heart. As a survivor of childhood trauma with lifelong anxiety and late-diagnosed ADHD, self-compassion and somatic work have been instrumental in my journey of healing, re-regulating my nervous system, learning self-trust, and freeing my voice. As a teacher, I connect practices from Alexander Technique, Craniosacral therapy, Reiki Certification, EFA (Emotional First Aid) Training, Mindful Teaching Training, Inner Child Work, and Tension & Trauma Release Training to guide individuals into awareness of their bodies, inner wisdom, and self-beliefs. Note: Self-Compassion and Somatic Work is embedded in my teaching philosophy, however, I do not use energy or healing touch during voice lessons. If you would like a Self-Compassion and Somatic session, I offer sessions to adults or children (with approval and presence of their legal guardian). These sessions are designed around each client's needs, however, they generally include a combination of Reiki Healing, nervous system re-regulation, and inner-child work. |
